About the designer
Paulo Alves' creative process is provided by his sensitivity, as well as by a great interest, awaken when he was still a young boy, in the work with wood. As an architecture student, he begins to follow the work of one of the icons of Brazilian architecture, Lina Bo Bardi, joining her studio in 1992.
“To explain the reality in a game of metaphors to reveal the core of the object” this is the continuous search for the abstraction sense, by the materials expressivity that guide the designer’s researches and experiments.
Paulo Alves is, before anything else, an architect who designs furniture, whose education, forged at the traditional Engineering School of São Carlos, from São Paulo University, will influence his work. From the observant glance to the project, passing by the product development in his workshop, all phases are connected according to a coherence of an engineering of object. It is in this constructive process that we find his trademark. This is the reason why the clients of his projects are artists from a number of horizons.
The spaces that he creates have feeble boundary lines and communicate themselves with no visual barriers whatsoever, and search for fluidity and the maximum integration. Many times the furniture is the architecture itself and fuses, confuses itself in the space. In a relentless search for freedom, his spaces and objects go beyond the functional chains, they look in the feature depurated of all artifices, the shape that is able to materialize the maximum of expressivity. Full of poetry, his creations show new possibilities and the exuberance that invigorates the legacy of the great masters of modern Brazilian furniture.
